Gardening in August: Preparing for Spring in Sydney

As winter draws to a close and the days slowly begin to lengthen, August is an exciting time for gardeners in Sydney. While the weather can still be cool, this month is all about preparing your garden for the burst of growth that spring will bring. Here are some tips to get your garden ready for the new season:

1. Pruning and Tidying Up
August is the perfect time to prune deciduous trees, roses, and fruit trees before new growth appears. Remove dead or diseased branches and shape your plants to encourage healthy growth. Don’t forget to tidy up fallen leaves and debris from garden beds to prevent pests and diseases.

2. Prepare Your Soil
Healthy soil is the foundation of any thriving garden. Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich your garden beds and improve soil structure. Turn the soil gently to aerate it, but be careful not to disturb any early bulbs that may be emerging.

3. Planting Time
August is ideal for planting a range of vegetables and flowers. Start sowing seeds of tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, and summer herbs indoors or in a greenhouse, ready to transplant when the weather warms up. You can also plant hardy annuals like marigolds, petunias, and snapdragons directly into garden beds.

4. Lawn Care
Give your lawn a head start for spring by removing weeds and aerating compacted areas. Apply a slow-release fertiliser to encourage lush, green growth as the temperature rises.

5. Pest and Disease Watch
Keep an eye out for aphids, snails, and slugs, which can become more active as the weather warms. Use environmentally friendly controls, such as hand-picking or introducing beneficial insects, to keep your garden healthy.

6. Mulch and Watering
Mulch garden beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from plant stems to prevent rot. Watering needs may still be low, but don’t let young seedlings dry out.

7. Prepare for Spring Blooms
If you haven’t already, plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, jonquils, and freesias. They’ll reward you with a splash of colour as soon as the weather warms.

August is a month of anticipation and preparation in the Sydney garden. With a little effort now, you’ll set the stage for a vibrant and productive spring. Happy gardening!
